Nathan Ely
I am a photographic artist and educator working out of Western New York. Currently, I serve as the Education Director at the Center for Exploratory and Perceptual Art.
I received my BA in filmaking/photography from Binghamton University and my MFA from the State University of NY at Buffalo.
My work is a spectrum of different approaches to photography, centered on a material and experimental practice, predominantly expressed through traditional photographic processes. Material and process invoke natural forces of light, water and chemical reaction - the phenomena of Nature within the phenomena of photography.
This approach puts me in touch with the science and material of photography, while introducing a trace of uncontrollable and unknown elemental force into the work. It is also a means to tap into the historical consciousness of the photograph, create a dialogue with it’s material past, and expand the vocabulary of contemporary photographic art.
